Writing Task

Write a story about a time when you had to make a difficult choice. Describe what happened and what you learned from the experience.

It was the last week of the summer holidays when I found an old map tucked inside a dusty book at my grandfather's house. The edges were worn and the ink had faded to a pale brown, but the markings were still clear enough to read — dotted lines, a hand-drawn compass rose, and a small X near what looked like a creek bed.

I spent three days deciding whether to follow it. Part of me was scared — what if it led somewhere dangerous? What if it was someone's private property? But another part, a louder part, kept whispering that some discoveries are worth the risk. Every time I tried to put the map away, I found myself picking it up again.

On the fourth morning, I packed a small bag — water, a snack, my phone — and set off alone before the rest of the house was awake. The air was cool and the bush was quiet. I followed the dotted line along a dry creek bed for nearly an hour, stopping twice when I thought I'd lost the path. Gum trees closed in around me and the only sounds were the crunch of dry leaves under my shoes and the distant call of a currawong.

By midday I had found what the map was pointing to: a wide hidden clearing, and at its centre, a tree so old and so wide that I couldn't wrap my arms around it even if I tried. The bark was rough and ridged like the skin of something ancient. I stood there for a long time, just looking up through the branches at the thin strips of sky above.

I didn't find treasure. But I found something better — the confidence to trust my own curiosity, and the memory of a morning that was entirely mine.
